Reading Time: 2 minutesBack in August we predicted that Social Search due to the arrival of Google Plus would change the SEO landscape forever. Are we clairvoyant? Sadly, no. However, we knew that Google Plus would have major changes to Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). Yesterday, Google unveiled its newest baby — Social Search. Let us explain this radical change and what you’ll see when and why.
If you’re an active user of Google Plus and logged into your Google account, you now get three options for search results:
1. Default Medley
There’s a new personal icon that will appear in your results list. By default, Google will serve up your social search results as a combination (personal and traditional). The SERP will include posts from colleagues in your Google Plus circles and items they have indicated an interest or endorsement with their coveted +1.
2. Hide Personal Results
Not ready for the change? Not to worry, as you have the option of hiding social search results. On the far right on the SERP you can hide personal search and go back to a traditional view.
3. Only Personal Results
On the flip side, you have the option of only viewing personal or social search results.
The dust still needs to settle on this latest change and how mainstream Googlers will react. However, we do know that businesses that take advantage of social search will get an SEO boost.
