A Simple SEO Weather Report

Are you weathering the recent Google Algorithm changes? There have been some minor lightning strikes, especially for those websites not using White Hat SEO techniques. Curious as to the SEO forecast? Moz has a cool site dedicated to tracking the Google Algorithm “weather patterns.” I’ll highlight some of my favorite data features:

Tracking the Google Algorithm Weather Patterns

We use Moz (formerly SEOMoz) to track keyword rankings and other SEO stuff. They created Mozcast to chronicle all the changes Google rolled out. Here’s an interesting factoid: Google revealed they made 516  algorithm changes in 2010. Moz has a list of all the Google updates at it seems the brisk pace continues. Personally I review this list (and others) to keep current on SEO-related chatter.

Insightful Metrics

Besides a temperature reading on Google Algorithm changes (Monday was a cool 65 degrees), it has these interesting metrics:

  • Weather for the Past 30 Days – shows SEO turbulence. Basically the hotter and stormier the weather, the more rankings changed.
  • Domain Diversity – % of unique sub-domains across the URLs in the data set; the less diversity, the more domain crowding observed.
  • SERP Count – trend of Google results with less than 10 organic listings on the first page (shows shrinkage)
  • Daily Big 10 – tracking the influencers like Wikipedia, amazon, YouTube, Facebook, etc…
  • Events – monthly summary of Google Algorithm changes

What’s the status of your SEO umbrella? Has it blown inside out or keeping you nice and dry?
