Polling Stations
Another Google innovation has appeared on the front page. When searching for Star Wars today I can see a poll on the front page of the Search Engine Results Page. Depending on your location the poll will show (I am in Asia, so perhaps they’re testing how well the Star Wars brand is doing in a different area). Judging on the results of the poll (only around 600,000 votes) it seems that the tests are fairly limited so far. But what could it mean for advertisers if polls are adopted more often?
What Could Google Polls Mean?
If Google uses this straw poll method more on the SERP it could help them answer useful questions for advertisers and SEOs. Voting on the poll hints at a user’s intention, especially when searching for a term as broad as “Star Wars”.
Also, now I have indicated that I intend to see it, it could potentially give advertisers a chance to focus their attention on me by suggesting which cinema to visit, or if I need three gallons of coke to drink while I’m there.
Mo’ Data Mo’ Problems
If and when Google decides to expand these polls is open to speculation. As is the assumption that the data they collect from the polls will be available to advertisers. Do you think Google polls could be useful? Yes. No. Not Sure.
