Marketing Blog: Habits for Success

A major contributor to SEO juice is a marketing blog, where content is added frequently and regularly. Many of our clients groan at the mere thought of having to blog. A typical objection is the amount of time required to keep up a marketing blog (e.g., research and creation of posts).  Most worries, like a lack of original ideas, are unfounded. If you are thinking about a marketing blog for your business, keep these good habits in mind:

Habit #1: Get Organized

Have a place to collect random ideas. You may want a virtual file (like on Google doc or WorkFlowy list) as well as a hard-copy file folder. Think about categories relevant to your business and topics you’ll be writing about. By starting off with a rough organization system in place, it will be easier to collect information and begin writing. Habit #2: Same Time, Same Place

According to many psychologists, it takes anywhere from 21 to 28 days to create a new habit. Three keys are consistency, rewards, and motivation. So, try to be consistent with regard to the time and location where you write your blog.  Over time it will get easier. Give yourself a realistic set amount of time to do research (find your source of inspiration). If it takes longer than 15 minutes… move on. Once you get the hang of it, a marketing blog post should take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Habit #3: Curiosity & Creativity

Humans aren’t one-dimensional. As an author you have many facets and interests to show your audience. Cultivate sources of inspiration from outside your industry.  As you are trawling for ideas, look to unusual news items and other tidbits from sites like USA Today Offbeat Headlines. Your posts will be timely as well as interesting.

Habit #4: Respond to Comments

In the blogging world getting comments are a good thing. It means you’re attracting an audience. Ask questions and when they respond, be sure to engage with your followers. The more you talk the more you engage your audience. After all, what’s the point of writing all this content if you’re not going to talk to the people who read it?
