Find Your Blog Writing Focus

A business blog is an excellent venue to demonstrate your industry expertise and establish your business as an authority. Consistently posting information related to your niche builds respect and readership. Readers will come to your blog expecting information on that topic. Find your tribe and talk to them in their language.

Your focus should be on what your business does. For example, a pet store owner could blog about all types of pets and pet care. The benefits of pet ownership, what to consider when buying a pet, and what to do when a pet dies or needs costly veterinary treatment are all relevant topics. However, this blog should not be used to discuss fashion, interior design, or building robots because those are not topics related to the business. Unless, of course, it somehow relates to pet couture like canine sweaters.

Remember, a business blog is not a personal diary. Don’t post angry rants, sappy updates, or other personal information. It is a business tool and, to be successful, it must be used accordingly.

Find Your Voice

Your writing style and voice should always be evident in your blog. If you are a humorist, allow your sense of humor to emerge in your writing. If you tend to be more serious, don’t try to crack jokes. It will come across as awkward and inauthentic.  Be real. As a blogger, you’re trying to speak directly to your audience. Readers respond best to someone who is genuine and sincere, a real person with whom they can relate.

Tell personal stories – humorous and serious. Share your opinions and respectfully respond to people who disagree. Post interesting pictures. Be honest. Be real (did I mention that one already?). Incorporating these elements are excellent ways to engage your audience and build your blog’s readership. You’ll also find the task of blog writing will get easier over time, especially once you’ve established a natural writing style.

Of course, you should keep stories, opinions, and pictures as focused on your niche as possible. For example, the pet store owner could easily post pictures and stories about pets she’d owned throughout her life. She could also share her opinions on the best pets, best pet names and other pet-focused topics. The consistency of the topics not only helps your human visitors, but also the Search Engine crawlers. If you’re publishing often, on the same topic, your site will be ranked more quickly the search engines, which means your content will be easier to find, faster.

Get Heard

As a business owner, you have a lot to offer as a blogger if you’re blogging in the right way. You have experience and expertise to share, and sharing it through a blog helps your website build SEO equity. Just set your focus and find your voice – and then have some fun with it.
