Who’s watching out for your website while you’re away from the office? Since we’re in the middle of the holiday season, we thought a post about Jetpack Monitor is particularly timely. I’ll explain what it is and why it’s essential for WordPress websites.

What is Jetpack Monitor?

Jetpack Monitor is a free way to automatically keep tabs on your website, alerting you in the event of a downtime event. The monitoring agent checks your website every five minutes, looking for issues. Here are the four steps in getting started:

• If you don’t already have a WordPress.com account, you need to set one up. Jetpack Monitor uses this account for email notifications.
• Jetpack installed on your WP website
• Activate Jetpack Monitor
• Make sure the website server doesn’t block the monitoring agent

Website Down Reduces Potential Sales

It’s typical that website servers undergo maintenance. Typically this maintenance is brief and occurs during off hours. Hopefully you have a 99+ uptime service from your website hosting provider. If you don’t know your uptime statistic, now is a good time to check.

I’ve found that if a website is down, most visitors aren’t motivated enough to call you. There may be some exceptions… your clients or vendors, for example, may care enough to pick up the phone or email you. Otherwise, you may be completely unaware that your virtual 24/7 salesperson has taken a break.
