Reading Time: 3 minutesThat Connect You With the Reader
Your content marketing may be brilliant. Your website design may be flawless. If you aren’t connecting with readers, though, every effort is wasted. From product marketing to personal online journals, the best marketing blogs engage the reader with storytelling, creative structure, and the option for communication. Here are three blog writing tips that will help you get in touch with your target audience.
Be Specific: Tell a Story
Would you rather read a dry tome on the facts and dates of World War II, or learn a little by watching a movie like Memphis Belle? History, science, and political documentaries are successful with narrative formats. You can do the same with your blog. Choose a specific story and tell it in clear, natural language. Tell stories about how products enhance the daily lives of real people, share anecdotes about real life happenings related to your niche, or give the history of your company or idea. Turn how-to blogs into fun narrative formats or surround information with humorous stories to keep the reader interested.
Vary the Structure
Pick up a major magazine next time you go through the supermarket checkout. Flip through and look at the pages — you’ll see most pages are broken up with pictures or graphic elements. In fact, many of the pages are almost all pictures with little text. That’s because the human eye needs a break. Even journals and newspapers that are filled mostly with text provide some white space, changing up the formatting of columns to create visual interest.
So how does this apply to our blog writing tips? We suggest varying the structure of your blog posts with images, bullet points, and spacing. White space lets the text breathe and looks less intimidating to readers. Blogs that include video, surveys, charts, and eye-catching images also tend to get more engagement as they can consume various ways.
One of the Most Important Blog Writing Tips: End With Engagement
Have you ever watched a television show on DVD or streamed episodes? If so, you might have found yourself up at 2:00 a.m. because you just had to watch the next episode. Strong shows end each episode with a hook to bring the viewer back for more.
So how do you use incorporate these blog writing tips into your writing practice?
- End each blog post with a hook as a way to engage the reader in communication.
- Ask questions that spark discussions in comment sections, provide social media links, or ask readers to vote in a poll. Readers who take action are vested in the content, which may drive interest in your products or services.
- Encourage them to share the post or come back to read more in the future.
Bonus Tip!
You can measure your blog writing success via Google Analytics. Look at metrics like returning vs. new visitors ratio, length of time on a page, and bounce rate. Your audience is telling you how much they like your content (or not). All you need to do is dig into the data to uncover your audience’s behavior and corresponding insights.
