A New Tool

As mentioned earlier in the week, Google is pushing their ‘mobile first’ concept pretty hard at the moment. As such, it’s great to see this new mobile speed testing tool they’ve just launched. Speed is a big part of the mobile experience, so a few seconds can make a big difference when you’re trying to get customers on their phones.

Compare and Contrast

Google’s Speed Scorecard and Impact Calculator helps you see how fast your site is on different levels of mobile internet connection (3G and 4G) in your country. At the moment it allows you to select 10 different domains and compare them all to see which responses quickest on a mobile device. We suggest you add a few benchmark websites and pick some of your competitors then see how your site performs among its peers.

Calculating the Value

Then once you have compared the speed of your site to others you can add your site into their Impact Calculator which gives you a rough idea of what improvements to your site speed could mean for your business. One or two seconds might not look like a lot, but the chances of a visitor waiting for decreases very quickly as the seconds drag on.

Google’s Mobile Site Speed Tester

In Google’s opinion, a site should take no longer than five seconds to load and they also state that for every extra second a site takes to load, after the initial 5, you can expect a 20% drop in visitors. So you really should be taking now of your loading times and using this new tool.
