9 Things Not to Do in Social Media Marketing – Part 1

Social media marketing can be perplexing for many business owners. As a veteran who spends 8+ hours a day in Twitter, Facebook and other SoMe platforms, I see some rookie mistakes. Here are nine things NOT to do:

1. Broadcasting not Sharing

Talk to people. Retweet their content. Comment on a blog. Don’t be the person who is standing on top of a chair shouting. It’ll get you a rep, and not the kind you want. Thank people for retweeting and commenting on your stuff. That’s the whole point of social media marketing, to get the word out about your business and helping others along the way.

2. Not Following Your Followers

Follow back so you can have a conversation. Unless there’s a reason not to follow back like they’re porn, spam, or a bot. I recommend curating your followers once a week so you’re following the right people and you’re encouraging a dialogue.

3. Drunk Tweeting

Actually, I’m not kidding. You’d be surprised at the tipsy tweets and inappropriate innuendos, not to mention the exclamation abuse!!!!!  This rule also applies when you’re angry. Then there’s the intersection of drunk and angry. Not pretty. This applies to any social media not just Twitter.

4. Plagiarizing

Not giving credit to others says a lot about the person. Say where you got things from. Or if you don’t remember, then say that too. The highest form of flattery is to requote or retweet someone. In this age of Social Media marketing show your generosity and share the love.

Check back as next time we’ll reveal 5 through 9…
