The final installment of our four-part series… or our love letter… about WordPress and why it’s an excellent Content Management System choice for most businesses. Don’t miss out on installment #1, #2, and 3 for other must-know goodies about this CMS.
Keeping your site safe from ne’er-do-wells can be a full-time job. Out of the box WordPress comes with very robust tools such as an integrated blacklist, an open proxy checker to manage and eliminate comment spam on your blog. Because WordPress is so popular, it also means that hackers are familiar with the CMS’s standard configurations. WP makes it easy to make simple yet effective changes to keep your site safe. For example, your user name should never be “admin” and you can manage those who have access to the website’s backend with varying degrees of access. During initial installation, also be sure to change the “wp-” prefix and use the secret keys in WP config. If you’re not sure what that means, not to worry. Give us a call and we can explain in more detail.
One last thought about security. WP has several security plug-ins to make your site even more bullet proof. Here are a few of our favorites: WP Security Scan, WP-MalWatch, ServerBuddy, WordPress Exploit Scanner, WordPress File Monitor, Login Lockdown.
9. Content is King
SEO 101 explains why content is so important to a website’s ranking. WordPress makes it easy to modify web pages, but it’s also a snap to add posts. For most businesses they’ll want to add posts on a variety of topics. Adding categories (to make it easy for your web visitor to search for content) on the fly is a great benefit. Once you’ve amassed a library of content, you may want to break it down to subcategories. WordPress understands that running your business is dynamic, and provides an infrastructure that can change as your business grows.
As you can see we’re raving fans of WordPress. Businesses don’t have to reinvent the wheel; they can take advantage of a menu of choices to customize any type of website that’s striking, stable, and scalable.
