8 Tips to Grab Attention & Keep Them Following
Cranking out social media content marketing can be a powerful tool for building a business’ audience. Getting their attention and keeping it is something different all together. Engagement via social media is one measure of online marketing success. Used correctly, social media content can expand your reach, drive website traffic, increase sales conversions, cure cancer, and end global warming. Ok, those last couple are a stretch, but you know what I mean.
We suggest these eight tips to attract and hold your audience’s attention:
1. Active & Descriptive Social Media Content
Be descriptive and inject action verbs often. Not only are well placed adjectives and interesting active verbs are more interesting, it sets the tone for your content. There are literally thousands of postings vying for your audience’s attention. You get only a few seconds to tempt them to read out. Think outside of the box, and make use of words that are not common.
2. What’s the Point?
Get straight to the point or your message will end up deleted. Long posts are often immediately passed over in favor of shorter ones that are quicker to read. Save lengthier content for your website, blog post series, a landing page or e-books. The goal is simply to get your audience’s attention, tempting them to read further. Don’t feel compelled to tell them everything in one post. Break it up over a series, but make sure the most important nugget leads first.
Statistics and facts can be the exclamation point to your social media content. By taking the stance of educating your audience, you are naturally demonstrating your value. Consistently sharing interesting factoids and riffing on them will earn you a reputation as a reliable source of information. Word of caution: don’t give in to the pressure of sharing a ton of data. Remember, bite sized chunks are more easily read… and shared. Of course, double-check your facts for accuracy and legitimacy
4. Direct Links
Slogging through multiple clicks to get to your social media content is a great way to lose your audience. Like a well-crafted meta description, a social media post offers a subtle promise. If you promise one thing and deliver another, that’s annoying. Having to dig and click through layers in order to get what you originally promised is deadly. Your click-through rates will suffer. Be careful of popup and/or display ads. While they can be a source of extra income, they can also cause your reader to hit the back button faster than you can imagine.
5. Cheque Your Speling
Kidding aside, be sure to proofread your posts. Get another set of eyes to double-check spellings, grammar and links whenever possible. Typos may not stand out like a sore thumb in longer content, yet embarrassing errors have a bigger impact in short posts.
6. Segment Your Audience
You’ll have greater social media content success if you segment out your target audience. By diving deep with a particular audience and getting very specific with your message, you’ll get more traction… meaning engagement, sharing, and hopefully purchasing. Localization may one way to parse out likely suspects into prospects. Another could be content that’s product or problem specific. A mentor once told me “don’t try and boil the ocean.” This tip is all about breaking out your target into manageable sections, writing content that speaks directly to them.
7. Find Influencers
Using Influencer marketing strategies like interviewing the top influencers in your sphere. That’s a great way to get learn as well as for them to get to know you. Share the limelight and relevant content. Once a relationship is built, they are more likely to share your content with their followers.
8. Quality Images
People share interesting and high quality images. Just look at your Facebook feed. Enough said.
Done well social media content can gather a crowd. You’ve attracted those folks who are most interested in what you offer. Be exceptional at it, and they’ll become your company’s evangelists.
