Just Ask Jeeves
Predicting the future is great fun. Especially when you’re doing it online and it’s easy for anyone to go back and look at the stupid predictions you made. Also, when you have a lot of content to churn out, some outlandish predictions might just get a few clicks. So is search dying? Not with millennials it isn’t….
In the technology sector everyone is always looking for the next big thing. Nobody wants to be caught with their minidisc player while everyone else is using iPods. Voice search is the ‘next big thing’™ in SEO and while there’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to voice search, the death of traditional search engines as we know them is still some time away. Another pretender to the Google crown is social media. Social media looms large over the internet and has been in the news a lot this year, but is it going to take over from search?
Search Engine Land
The team at Search Engine Land took the time to carry out some research into search habits and found some interesting data. Specifically they look at attitudes towards SEO when compared to social media.
As we’re often being told social media is shaping global politics, so it must be the fact finding tool of choice, right? Well, not according to this study. Their conclusion is essentially that search is still number one when it comes to searches that matter. You might ask for an opinion on social media, but if it’s serious information that you’re after, you’ll go to Google. So while social media usage is still on the rise, it doesn’t seem to be ready to take over from search just yet.
Long Live the King
So if Google is going to stick around for awhile longer, that means that SEO is still going to be useful. Which is good news for us at Spectrum. What changes do you see coming? At Spectrum were interested in how schema will help search engines improve over the coming year and, despite the skepticism above, are curious to see how voice search will evolve now more people are using smart home tools like Alexa and Google Home.
