On December 7, Raven CEO announced that they will be removing ranking information on January 2nd. For the SEO tool novice, Raven is an aggregator or SEO dashboard. It integrates more than 15 sources of data for a variety of online marketing uses, including White Hat SEO, social and content marketing. We’ve come to rely on their reports and insights to keep our White Hat SEO firmly in place. We feel like Santa announced he’ll be bypassing our chimney this year. Actually, it’s more like he’s taking away a present delivered in years past.
Why The Drastic Change?
Basically Google ordered a cease and desist order, citing improper use of the API. So, in order to be in compliance, Raven can no longer offer Google rankings and are eliminating its SERP tracker tool. Adios. Sayonara. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Pundits expect that other SEO tools who use Google’s AdWord API (if they haven’t already received notice and complied) will get similar marching orders from the Mountain View giant. According to the fine print chronicled in Patrick Keeble’s post:
In order to be in compliance with the AdWords API Terms and Conditions please cease offering any product or product features that collects scraped data or used scraped data acquired from another source (this includes the functionality offered under website and keyword research in your tool).
Where Does an SEO Tool Go From Here?
So we’re on the quest to find the perfect SEO tool. Based upon our research so far, it doesn’t look like one really exists. Or, at least one that has all the bells and whistles we seek. Granted we have Ferrari tastes yet need to adhere to our BMW budget. Santa, in case you’re reading this post, here’s our SEO tool wish list:
- SEO rankings
- SEO keyword research
- Competitor research
- White label capability
- Link management
- Social Media tracking
What would put all of the above attributes into a beautifully wrapped package? If it was offered by an SEO industry leader, one who will mostly likely stay in the game for years to come. While we’re willing to try out market newbies, they need to prove that they’ll be around for future industry shake ups.
So, what do you want Santa to bring you — SEO wise?
