Optimizing Your Mobile Website
Mobile First World
Everything in 2016 seems to be about Mobile. So continuing that trend today we are talking about optimizing your mobile website in the best possible way. Making sure you’re getting your share all of those mobile dollars!
As more searches are being done on mobile than desktop computers the need to have a fully mobile friendly website is more urgent than ever. Before it was okay to have a basic mobile site or a desktop site that didn’t adjust for mobile. But with advances in mobile technology, these sites have started to be few and far between.
The online mobile experience needs to be smooth. Expectations have changed, and now users expect as good an experience on mobile as they do on a full site. When you move from the SERP to a website this needs to be remembered. Shorten descriptions where needed. Make entering payment details easy and intuitive. Offer frictionless payments if people are returning customers (like Amazon’s ‘One click buy’). As Google have said, if your website isn’t fully optimized for mobile, it will be penalized in search rankings.
There’s Probably an App For That
One way to deal with the increase in mobile browsing is building a dedicated app. If you do decide to build an app you should make sure that it is indexed. Google’s app indexing, now known as Firebase App Indexing is a service that indexes the content in your app in exactly the same way it would your website.
This means that your content in your app will be presented on the SERP alongside normal results when it matches a user’s search. So a user can navigate directly from search into your app, without having to leave their browser to open the app (note, this would only work if the user already has the app installed). At the moment, is seems that many companies are behind the curve on this, with only around 25% of all apps on Android and iTunes being indexed at the moment. So if you have an app, get it indexed, and your mobile app engagement should increase dramatically.
Speed Is Everything
One of the biggest factors to consider when optimizing your mobile website is speed. If people are loading a website with lots of rich content like embedded video, large images or Live Chat apps it’s going to take time. But on mobile people are less likely to wait around than they may be on a desktop computer. To further enforce this point Google has announced that their next mobile-based update will consider speed as a major factor in how they rank sites.
To make your site faster on mobile you need to avoid unnecessary clutter, have smaller images, avoid any auto-playing content keeping it as streamlined as possible. In many ways, your mobile site should be more like a landing page. Having a clear CTA, and trying to keep the distractions to a minimum.
As a way to improve mobile browsing, Google is now championing Accelerated Mobile Pages. AMP streamlines your site for mobile, with Google claiming that site speed can be significantly increased when pages are built with AMP.
Are you worried about your mobile site? Thinking about learning AMP to get the edge on your competition? We’d love to hear what you think about the move to mobile.
