Reading Time: 2 minutesThe most interesting way people are using mobiles isn’t so APParent. Mobile apps are now a $10 billion dollar market, growing at a rate of about 100% per year. Angry Birds now has over 600 million downloads. That is more downloads than any other mobile game has ever been able to reach. As if that isn’t impressive enough, consider this… over 20,000 years of Angry Birds have been played. In the course of 2 years, AngryBird players have collectively invested 20,000 years on mobile apps towards gaming. Eerie. And a little sad.
Other apps are proving the power of social media on mobile. Meet Instagram. Instagram launched 1.3 years ago… It now has 13 employees and 25+ million users. This mobile app lets users post photos to share with their friends. Thanks to a series of available filters, every photograph looks like it was taken by a pro. It’s a little confidence boost for photography amateurs like myself. It makes even the most basic photos look artsy!
Meet my other friend, “Draw Something.” It’s a combination of mobile, social, and art. “Draw Something” was launched 6 weeks ago and is now the number 1 app in 79 countries, generating over $100,000+ of revenue per day. To shed some light on how limitless the potential for mobile apps is, on February 12th, “Draw Something” users drew 3 drawings per second. On March 8th, about a month later, users drew 3,000 drawings per second. The possibility for the future of apps is phenomenal. For instance, it took AOL 9 years to get to 1 million users. It took Facebook 9 months, and “Draw Something” only took 9 days.
The mobile app market is one in which users can chose the app that they want amidst thousands of options. There are apps for nearly everything, and for the few things that there aren’t apps for, there will be in the near future.
So, what’s your favorite mobile app?
