In Silicon Valley it’s not uncommon for large high-tech companies to have small spin-offs to cultivate ideas for new products and services. Google X, a semi-secret research arm of the search engine giant, is just that.
Google X’s Most Notable Product
Of course research at Google is unique. According to a recent article from MIT’s Technology Review, “Google manages to invest in fundamental research without having a traditional lab in which to do it.”
How cool to have research within a company that’s truly collaborative across the organization. Many Googlers are PhDs with a research background. So research isn’t treated like a separate entity. Rather it happens across departments and teams. The focus is on projects that have time frames between 6-12 months. That’s a radically different approach… and one that seems to be working.
