Google I/O buzz has turned to Easter Eggs. These are not the Paas-colored kind. Rather they are intentional hidden messages using technology (in programs or applications). WordPress and Googlers are notorious jokesters, rolling out secret messages to their respective communities. Google I/O Easter Egg Benefits
In light of recent news that Yahoo’s CEO, Marissa Mayer, banning employees from working at home because they weren’t actually doing much work, why would Google let their programmers spend time creating Easter Eggs? Is it giving them a license to play at work? For those who personally know Googlers, they tend to work long hours. The campus provides so many amenities… from restaurants to hot tubs to bowling alleys… that some Googlers only go home to sleep. Even so, what are the business reasons to hide Easter Eggs? Here are three in my humble opinion:
1. Reflection of corporate culture.
According to their website, they have built a culture of openness, cultivating employees who are smart, dedicated and determined for online excellence. Creating Easter Eggs takes programming chops as well as imagination.
2. Engaging with Evangelists
Apps Resellers, Google Adword Consultants, etc tend to be loyal, evangelists even. These are Google’s minions in the field, spreading Google greatness. Hidden messages are another way to interact and engage with those who use their applications and programs.
3. Viral Marketing
Typically you don’t have to be a techy to enjoy Easter Eggs. Even if you don’t plan on attending the 2013 Google I/O event, you’re more likely to share this secret with others. That buzz creates brand awareness which is just smart.
Have you played around with the Google I/O Easter Eggs? Did you find one that I missed? Do share!
